How to Dress when you Run

ORN: 6.1 miles, 59:59, 9:48/mile

This morning, the folks at
Complete Running Network were kind enough to post an article and spreadsheet I submitted to them recently.

The article,
Dress for Winter Running Success captures a simple system I’ve developed over the years to know EXACTLY what to wear in any temperature from 10F on up. In two degree increments.

Pure geek-ness, I know. But, hey, that’s kind of who I am.

Enjoy. And persevere. In any weather.

Joe,
I'm sorry, but I'm laughing out loud. Only an engineer would come up with a chart like that...

Eric's comment is: He's definitely a "lean engineering guy"!

I bet that chart is very satisfying to your engineering soul!

My system is much less refined: shorts 40 and up, tights 39 and down. Long sleeve shirt, arm warmers, vest and gloves in the 40s or lower. Drop the arm warmers if it's 48 or up. Add a cap if its raining. Fleece ear warmers if its raining and under 40 (with the cap), fleece hat if its 32 or lower. Wind might alter things a bit. That's it!

As a software engineer, I LIKE the chart :-) As a matter of fact, comes in real handy for a newbie like me. I'm sure in another couple of months I'll be an expert and I can throw clothes on and off as an after thought, but until I reach the appropriate level of expertness, I think I'll take a look see at your chart!

Perfect. Now I'm just going to keep hoping for 38 or more on December 2 and if it ever gets down to 10 in my neck of the woods, I will definitely heed your advice to stay home.

I enjoyed reading your entry on CRN and downloaded your spreadsheet. : ) I'm organized and obsessive, but I'm very much NOT an engineer. Hmmm...I wonder how rain might factor into the system...

saw the post yesterday Joe....AWESOME.

haven't checked out the spreadsheet yet, but i will! i curious to see if 'my mileage may vary' with it...or if we are the same. fun experiment!

(heck, i've only recently started checking the temp before i leave for a run.)

Joe- I love the chart. I am an in the closet geek so I haven't put any of my charts out there yet.

Joe, after looking at your chart, I realized 1) I know why I am not an engineer, and 2) I don't have a system! My weather check is to ask David: So what should I wear? He knows I always dress too warmly, so when I want to pile it on, he reminds me that it's a momentary chill!!
